Battery Park

"The primary objective of the park is as a rural resort where the people of all classes, escaping from the glare, and glitter, and turmoil of the city might find relief for the mind, and physical recreation."

— Egbert L. Viele, Chief Engineer of Central Park, 1861.

On weekdays, cars are permitted on Central Park's Loop Drive. The following pictures and sound samples compare the conditions at the Sheep Meadow (near 68th Street, across from Tavern on the Green) when cars are or are not permitted on the drive.

Activists are concerned about the presence of cars in Central Park not only due to their disruption of the park's tranquility, but also for safety reasons. For more information, refer to the Transportation Alternatives Web site.
